According to Wikipedia, Amigurumi is the Japanese art of creating small creatures using knitting or crocheting. The word Amigurumi is derived from the Japanese word, ami, which means crocheted or knitted and Kurumi, which means wrapping.
Amigurumi comes in variable sizes and looks. While this wonderful craft is native to Japan, it became popular in the west in 2003. Today, you can find literally thousands of free patterns on the internet and tons of videos on you tube on how to create beautiful works of art using this technique.
What yarn and hooks to use for Amigurumi?
You can use whatever thickness or texture yarn when making your amigurumi. Thinner yarn, used with smaller hooks will result in smaller animals whereas thicker yarn with larger hooks will result in larger animals. So, it is up to you to choose the yarn that you desire to make your project. I like using velvet, cotton and acrylic blend yarn for my projects.
How to get started with Amigurumi?
Even though the finished product may appear to be a little daunting at first, Amigurumi is simply made with crochet single stitches made in circles. The size of the circle is altered by by increasing and decreasing crochet stitches. It is important to start with a well written pattern that is explained in a step by step manner with pictures and videos in order to make it easy to start this fun form of art.
